Do you think this is important do to or just once you have gained a lot of popularity?

It depends. Are you making a blog through a paid service? Or are you going to be using the likes of blogspot? If it's a free blog, you probably can't purchase its own domain name. Purchasing a blog domain name for a paid site is probably the first thing you should do though.
