Free traffic by word of mouth/putting up posters

I know this isn't the most ideal way of doing things, but it's a useful way to some extent. A lot of people utilize word of mouth to their advantage. I love putting up posters all around my home town and also when I travel I do the same thing. It may not be the most effective, but it can be helpful.
